Maija Haavisto built her personal website “Maija’s Homepages” in 1997, and while its content was interesting and highly varied, the design was starting to grow old, and didn’t look professional enough in comparison to most modern websites.

To promote her career as a novelist, medical writer and all-around journalist, she planned Fiikus, a whole new version of her site. It had to be up to modern standards; however, it still had to be unique and reflect her personality. So she hired me to create the design for Fiikus according to those requirements.

She came up with the idea of the bookshelf, to allude to her writings. I decided to add painted textures from Resurgere to show her artistic side, and flowers to hint at her love of plants.

Most of the design work was done on the frontpage; I didn’t get to add a custom design to other pages. The CSS dropdown menus were added later, at the client’s request.

At the end I was satisfied with the result, but after a short while I found myself wanting to redesign this website again.
